COVID surge cancels 2021 Sydney International Wine Comp

Organisers of the Sydney International Wine Competition have announced the 2021 event has been cancelled due to continued lockdowns in Australia and domestic and international border closures.

This is the second year in a row that the competition has had to be cancelled because of difficulties guaranteeing arrival of both wines and judges, says co-convenor of the Competition, Brett Ling.

“We had confirmed our judging panel and were on track to accept entries, but the worsening situation in NSW, the closure of State borders and abandonment of the trans-Tasman travel bubble made the staging of the competition this year impossible,” said Ling.

“We discussed the issue with freight forwarders and because of the fluidity of the situation, no guarantees could be made. Even worse, there was no way we could be certain that we could bring in our elite judging panel from interstate and overseas.”

Ling says they plan to bring the competition back in 2022. “Hopefully with such promising vintages in Australia and New Zealand over the past few years, we look forward to showcasing an outstanding level of entries.”
