Fifth “World’s Best” title for Cassels at World Beer Awards 2023

Christchurch’s Cassels Brewing Co. is celebrating a fifth consecutive “World’s Best” title at the World Beer Awards 2023 in London, after its Cassels Milk Stout reclaimed “World’s Best Milk Stout”.

The brewery won the same title in 2020 and 2022, as well as winning “World’s Best Stout & Porter” in 2019 and “World's Best American Style Pale Ale” for its Cassels American Pale Ale in 2021.

The World Beer Awards is regarded as one of the most prestigious global beer awards, selecting the very best of internationally recognised styles of beer.

The judges described Cassels’ award-winning Milk Stout as having: “Intense espresso notes on the nose, with rounded roasted notes, accompanied by a touch of sweetness, culminating in a very dry finish.”

Cassels Head Brewer, Simon Bretherton, is delighted with the win. “We are absolutely thrilled to have our Milk Stout achieve such a fantastic win on the  international stage.  We are so proud of the massive effort that the team puts in every day to create our beers and it is great that that effort has been consistently acknowledged at a major global beer awards.”

The rigorous judging process at the World Beer Awards includes multiple rounds conducted by specialist tasting panels of international beer experts. The first round is a blind tasting within style categories to identify and select the style winner in each country. In the next two rounds, all “Country Style” winners are tasted against each other to identify the very best in each style as the worldwide winner.
