Medal results out in NZ Spirits Awards

Medal results in the 6th annual NZ Spirits Awards have been revealed , ahead of the major trophy announcements next month.

The Awards are hosted by industry bodies Spirits New Zealand and Distilled Spirits Aotearoa.

Of the 451 entries judged more than 300 were from New Zealand distillers, and organisers say that gin again dominated the entries, with 192 put forward for consideration.

The full results catalogue is available online here.

Spirits New Zealand Chief Executive, Robert Brewer, says this year’s medal results tell a strong story for the local distilling industry. “There are more gold and double gold medals awarded to New Zealand distilled product than ever before.”

Of the 79 Gold and Double Golds awarded, 48 were to New Zealand distilled product, an increase of 19% on the previous year.

“And when you consider that one entire category is for Scotch and Irish Traditional whiskey then the result is even more pronounced,” says Robert.

Judging for the Awards took place in early August in Wellington, with 22 judges assessing the entries. Overall, there were 79 Double Gold and Gold, 201 silver and 120 bronze medals awarded.

Trophies for the best of the best in each spirits category will be awarded at a gala dinner in Auckland on 13 September.
