Jingle all the way

The busiest time of the year is upon us – Pervinder Davies has some festive season survival tips for licensed premises...

As the festive break and summer holidays approach, licensed premises across the country are gearing up for the crowds. Here are some helpful tips for bar and restaurant owners to keep staff and customers happy and ensure their operations run smoothly .

Employee entitlements on public holidays
Understanding employee entitlements during public holidays is essential. Employees are entitled to be paid at least time and a half for working on a public holiday. If the holiday falls on a day they would normally work, they are also entitled to an alternative holiday, or a day in lieu. This applies to all employees, whether they are full-time, part-time, or casual. Managing these entitlements correctly not only keeps you compliant with the law but also ensures your staff feel valued and motivated during this busy period.

Compliance with licensing laws
Compliance with alcohol licensing laws is non-negotiable, especially during the festive season when scrutiny can be higher. If you plan to extend your operating hours, make sure you have the necessary approvals from your local council. For any special events or functions outside your usual operations, apply for special licences well in advance.

Maintaining high standards of host responsibility is also crucial. This includes providing food, non-alcoholic beverages, and safe transport options for patrons, ensuring everyone has a good time while staying safe.

Remember too, that Auckland’s new local alcohol policy comes into full effect from 9 December with changes to maximum trading hours. From this date:
• bottle shops and supermarkets across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland will not be able to sell alcohol after 9pm.
• bars, restaurants and other on-licences permitted by the District Licensing Committee will be able to sell alcohol until no later than 4am in the central city, and 3am outside of the central city.
• sports clubs and RSAs permitted by the District Licensing Committee will be able to sell alcohol until 1am.

For any special events or functions outside your usual operations, apply for special licences well in advance.

Staffing and training
Adequate staffing and proper training are vital to handle the holiday rush. Consider hiring additional seasonal staff to manage the increased workload. Ensure they are trained in the responsible service of alcohol and are familiar with your establishment’s policies. Emphasise the importance of excellent customer service, as a well-trained, friendly team can make all the difference in creating a positive atmosphere.

Health and safety
Ensure a safe environment for both staff and customers. Implement effective crowd control measures to prevent overcrowding and ensure a pleasant experience for all patrons. Review and practise emergency procedures with your staff, including fire safety and first aid. A well-prepared team can handle any situation calmly and efficiently, ensuring the safety of everyone in your venue.

Marketing and promotions
Boost your business and plan ahead with strategic marketing and promotions. Create special promotions and events to attract customers, such as themed nights, live music, or festive menus and promote them through your social media channels. Highlight any special offers or unique aspects of your venue to draw in the crowds. A well-executed marketing plan can significantly increase your visibility and customer base during the festive season.

Inventory management
Efficient inventory management is crucial to meet the increased demand during the holiday period. Ensure you have adequate stock of popular items and monitor inventory closely to avoid shortages. Communicate with suppliers to ensure timely deliveries, especially for high- demand items.

Create a festive atmosphere
It’s a special time of year when people are looking forward to festive celebrations and summer catch-ups so make sure your venue reflects that. Festive lighting, themed decorations, and tailored playlists can go a long way to creating a relaxed environment that customers want to spend time in. Proper planning and attention to detail will help you navigate the busy period smoothly, providing a safe and enjoyable environment for both your staff and patrons. Happy holidays!
